School berates 17yo student who went without following the Dress Code
A student from Florida high school was told to cover her chest by the administration because she didn’t wear a bra to the school, they also said that it was causing distraction among the classmates.
According to a report by Bradenton Herald on Friday that Lizzy Martinez, 17, decided not wear a bra under her shirt on Monday, and the administration felt her lack of a bra was causing other students to lose focus.
Martinez said that the humiliation started when School Dean Violeta Velazquez called her to the office. She felt like she was being bullied by the fellow classmates, to which Dean said that the absence of her undergarment was creating a distraction and it needed to be addressed.
‘She told me that I needed to put a shirt on under my long-sleeve shirt to try to tighten my breasts – to constrict them,’ Martinez told the paper. ‘And then she asked me to move around.’
But the shirt was apparently not covering the distraction per se, so she was sent to the office of the nurse where she was handed four bandages to cover her chest.
This humiliation led her to cry. She took her frustration to twitter the very next day.
‘I decided not to wear a bra today and got pulled out of class bc one of my teachers complained that it was a ”distraction to boys in my class.” My school basically told me that boys’ education is far more important than mine and I should be ashamed of my body.’
This tweet was followed by another which lead her to be blocked by the School’s Twitter handle, the tweet stated, ‘Stop s*x*alizing my body,’
The admission of the mistake was made on Thursday afternoon by the school district, in which it acknowledged that the officials could have handled the situation better, but also added that they were only trying to enforce the dress code.
‘This matter was brought to the attention of the Superintendent’s Office for review,’ the district’s general counsel, Mitchell Teitelbaum, said in a prepared statement.
‘It is undisputed that this matter should have been handled differently at the school level and corrective measures have been taken to prevent a recurrence in the way these matters will be addressed in the future.’
Teitelbaum went on to say that the girl was in violation of the dress code, which was distracting other students and the staff was only trying to fix the violation.
‘You are expected to dress appropriately for school and for the business of learning with proper attention given to personal cleanliness, grooming and neatness,’ the district’s Code of Student Conduct states.
However, there is no mention of wearing bras specifically in the dress code.
